We Are The World, lo storico brano compie 40 anni!

Il 28 gennaio 1985, esattamente 40 anni fa, un gruppo straordinario di artisti si riunì per registrare “We Are the World“, una canzone destinata a lasciare un segno indelebile nella storia della musica pop e nella solidarietà globale. L’iniziativa, nota come USA for Africa, mirava a raccogliere fondi per combattere la devastante carestia che stava affliggendo l’Etiopia negli anni ’80.

Il progetto nacque dalla collaborazione tra Michael Jackson e Lionel Richie, che insieme scrissero il brano. La produzione fu affidata al leggendario Quincy Jones, il quale, consapevole dell’eccezionalità dell’evento, affisse all’ingresso dello studio di registrazione un cartello con la scritta: “Lasciate il vostro ego alla porta”. Un chiaro invito agli artisti a mettere da parte le rivalità personali per concentrarsi su una causa più grande.

La sessione di registrazione si svolse presso gli A&M Recording Studios di Los Angeles, subito dopo la cerimonia degli American Music Awards. Tra i 45 artisti partecipanti figuravano nomi illustri come Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Cyndi Lauper e molti altri. Ognuno di loro apportò il proprio stile unico, contribuendo a creare un’armonia senza precedenti.

Il singolo, pubblicato nel marzo 1985, divenne rapidamente un successo mondiale, vendendo oltre 20 milioni di copie e raccogliendo più di 50 milioni di dollari per l’assistenza umanitaria in Africa. “We Are the World” non solo scalò le classifiche musicali, ma dimostrò anche il potere della musica nel sensibilizzare l’opinione pubblica e mobilitare risorse per cause benefiche.

A distanza di quattro decenni, “We Are the World” rimane un simbolo di unità e solidarietà. La sua eredità continua a ispirare artisti e appassionati di musica, ricordando a tutti noi l’impatto che una collaborazione globale può avere nel affrontare le sfide umanitarie.
