What You Should Know:

– At the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO) 2025 Congress, GE HealthCare today announced significant advancements in its radiation oncology offerings.

– These include an intended expansion of its portfolio through a partnership with Spectronic Medical AB and the introduction of MR Contour DL™, a new AI-enabled tool for treatment planning. The company is also showcasing its updated Intelligent Radiation Therapy (iRT) software solution, all aimed at improving precision and efficiency in cancer care.

– GE HealthCare emphasized that these innovations align with global efforts to combat cancer, a leading cause of death worldwide, by providing healthcare professionals with advanced tools for earlier detection and more precise treatment.

Strategic Partnership with Spectronic Medical

GE HealthCare announced its intent to add software from Spectronic Medical AB, a Swedish company focused on advanced image analysis, to its radiation oncology portfolio. Specifically, GE HealthCare plans to leverage Spectronic’s FDA 510(k) cleared and CE-marked MRI Planner software. This AI-powered software converts standard MR images of the brain, head-neck, and pelvis into synthetic CT images, which are necessary for radiation therapy planning, thereby enabling MR-only radiotherapy workflows.

“Spectronic Medical was founded on the vision that advanced MRI and AI technologies can unlock entirely new possibilities in radiotherapy,” said Dr. Carl Siversson, CEO of Spectronic Medical. “Our MRI-only radiotherapy planning innovations, amplified by GE HealthCare’s global reach and clinical depth, aim to support the evolution toward more precise, personalized, and accessible cancer care.”

This technology is expected to complement GE HealthCare’s existing solutions for MR-guided radiotherapy, including the AIR™ RT Coil Suite and AI applications like AIR™ Recon DL. “We’re committed to advancing MR imaging capabilities in radiation therapy to deliver more accurate and precise care,” said Kelly Londy, president and CEO, MR, GE HealthCare. “The anticipated addition of Spectronic’s software offering… would support our vision for an MR-based radiation oncology workflow.”

FDA Clearance for AI-Powered MR Contour DL

GE HealthCare also announced the U.S. FDA 510(k) clearance of MR Contour DL™, an AI model utilizing deep learning for the segmentation of organs at risk (OAR). This tool leverages the detailed soft-tissue contrast available in MR images to automatically create precise organ contours needed during radiation therapy planning – a process previously done manually. MR Contour DL can segment 37 different organs and structures in the head-neck and pelvic regions from standard MR image datasets, bringing enhanced efficiency, consistency, and accuracy to planning.

MR Contour DL will be integrated into GE HealthCare’s iRT digital solution, helping to reduce diagnostic time and workload. When used alongside MRI Planner and other GE HealthCare MR tools, it enables a complete AI-driven, MR-only simulation workflow designed for highly precise radiation therapy.
