Rackspace Guides Customers Through Both Optimization and Innovation in the Cloud

Rackspace Technology is one of most deeply rooted companies in the cloud space, having started many years before Amazon.com entered the market with S3, at a time when we spoke of “hosted services” rather than the “cloud.” In this video, PV SubbaRao, Senior Vice President of Healthcare and Life Sciences at Rackspace, offers guidance to healthcare firms in adopting or making better use of cloud services.

For both companies new to cloud computing and those who are well established there, he advises looking “beyond infrastructure” and seeking new ways to use data to incrementally create new forms of value.

Similarly, there are often ways to optimize the use of your cloud vendor, which generally offers a variety of payment models. You can’t just do what you see other companies doing, but must understand your workloads and use of data in order to choose an optimal payment model.

The cloud can be part of “continued innovation,” with the adoption of AI being an obvious example. There’s a “balancing act” between optimizing the cloud for your current operations and adding innovative new uses of data; “don’t do everything at once.” Capital expenditures must also be balanced with operating expenses.

SubbaRao also touches on the importance of hiring the right programmers and partners to implement new initiatives. And he speaks to security, disaster recovery, and other forms of risk avoidance. He reminds viewers to keep track of their responsibilities in the security area, because different types of “as a Service” models place different requirements on the user for access control, etc.
