After a decade away from films, Cameron Diaz makes her return to the screen in the Netflix action thriller “Back in Action” alongside Jamie Foxx who suffered a stroke while they were filming back in April 2023.

In the movie, the pair play married former CIA operatives who get pulled back into the spy life after their covers are blown. There’s a lot of pressure on the film to be a good enough vehicle for both stars, sadly it hasn’t proven the case.

With 46 reviews counted on Rotten Tomatoes, the film sits at a dismal 24% with an average rating of just 4.4/10. Even the audience score so far in its first few hours of release is at a pretty weak 66% (3.6/5). Here’s a sampling of reviews:

“There’s just enough bite there to give the stars something to work with, and Diaz especially responds with the joy of the well-rested.” – Ty Burr, Washington Post

“Their fizzy chemistry and ease with the characters’ repartee are a welcome reminder of what effortlessly appealing screen performers they are.” – David Rooney, THR

“It’s for films like ‘Back in Action’ that the word ‘mediocre’ was invented, because it’s not that this film is bad. It’s not interesting or ambitious enough to be bad. It simply ‘is.'” – William Bibbiani, The Wrap

“Cameron Diaz is back from semi-retirement, and she Jamie Foxx have real charisma. But this muddled effort can’t decide if it’s an action movie, comedy, or family film.” – Emily Zemler, Observer

“Diaz and Foxx still got it, the film constantly screams. The evidence on display, however, suggests otherwise.” – Nick Schager, The Daily Beast

“This isn’t the worst movie of its type, but as a globe-trotting adventure it’s cheap-looking, and as a comedy, it’s only mildly amusing. Two stars capable of doing more are forced to do less.” – Jesse Hassenger, IGN

“‘Back in Action’ follows a distressingly familiar pattern, with every stunt-heavy confrontation accompanied by a needle drop of an old standard.” – Richard Roeper, Chicago Tribune

“The uninspired script drags in all the wrong places and the set pieces fail to dazzle, ensuring that the film succeeds as neither an action movie nor a comedy.” – Christian Zilko, Indiewire

“Back in Action” is now available for streaming on Netflix.
