Patrick Mahomes scored so many touchdowns the Chiefs ran out of fireworks in game that started the dynasty

Patrick Mahomes is the NFL’s comeback king. The Kansas City Chiefs superstar can rarely be counted out thanks to his uncanny ability to dig his team out of a hole. At the same stage in the 2019 season, Mahomes’ hopes of reaching the Super Bowl for the first time looked to be over. Deshaun Watson led the Texans to a commanding 24-0 lead as the Chiefs suffered a complete meltdown. A blocked punt returned for a touchdown, four dropped passes, a Tyreek Hill muffed punt that ended in a Houston score… things could not have gone any worse. What happened next was ridiculous even by Mahomes’ standards – and talkSPORT’s Brian T. Smith was at Arrowhead to bear witness. “Before DeMeco Ryans and C.J. Stroud, this game perfectly captured the Texans’ entire franchise,” he explained. “They silenced Arrowhead Stadium on a freezing day. Houston was doing everything right to the point that it was unbelievable. Then a couple backward decisions and it all fell apart.” The man responsible for the bad decisions? Former head coach Bill O’Brien. With the score at 21-0, he decided to kick a field goal instead of attempting to convert from fourth-and-inches at the Chiefs’ 13-yard-line. Kansas City answered back with a score and O’Brien made another costly mistake. Facing a fourth-and-four from their own 31, the Texans’ fake punt was stuffed after a great play from safety Daniel Sorensen. Mahomes had another TD on the board within 23 seconds. A 41-point streak ensued as Mahomes and Andy Reid cooked up constant torture for the Texans defense — scoring so many touchdowns that Arrowhead Stadium ran out of fireworks by the fourth quarter. “You could feel it and there was no stopping it,” added our man on the ground. “Patrick Mahomes took over and Andy Reid could do no wrong. Chiefs fans went crazy. “It got so bad for the Texans that the Chiefs ran out of fireworks because they scored so many points.” Mahomes became the first player in playoff history to pass for 300-plus yards, rush for 50-plus yards, and throw five TDs in a game. The Chiefs scored TDs on seven straight drives to rack up 51 points in 32 minutes of play. Mahomes would go on to be named Super Bowl MVP in a win over the San Francisco 49ers — via a comeback, of course. “This was the real start of the dynasty,” said Smith. “No one comes back from 24-0 at home against a team with a Pro Bowl quarterback who’s on the verge of becoming a new face of the NFL — except for Mahomes and his Chiefs. “Mahomes made Deshaun Watson forgettable and Bill O’Brien was fired as Texans coach just nine months later. “The Chiefs were unstoppable once they woke up and Kansas City was on the way toward its first Super Bowl trophy.” Ryans and Stroud have restored pride to the Texans and will know they cannot afford to take their foot off the gas at any point if they are to banish the ghosts from five years ago.
