Filoni’s Star Wars Movie May Depend On Success Of The Mandalorian And Grogu | Barside Buzz

The new Barside Buzz is that Dave Filoni’s Star Wars movie getting made, may depend on the success of The Mandalorian and Grogu at theatres. The information comes from Daniel RPK on Patreon and he says he’s heard that is The Mandalorian and Grogu does not meet expectations, then Lucasfilm may have their MandoVerse finale as a series after all. 

Filoni’s movie was announced before The Mandalorian and Grogu was even a thing. Remember that scripts had already been written for The Mandalorian Season 4. The original plan definitely seemed to be, several TV series, all building up to a climax as a movie. However, things changed at Disney. No longer could they afford to spend movie budgets on TV shows. Plus Disney needed some Star Wars box office money, quickly. Thus, The Mandalorian and Grogu came about.

Now, Mando and Grogu are popular characters, but popular enough to have fans going to theatres in droves? It’s hardly Star Wars Episode 7 level of hype when it was announced. I could see casual Star Wars fans just assuming it’s a quick run in theatres before it comes to Disney+. Literally no one asked for a Mandalorian and Grogu movie. It was a fun TV show. 

It therefore makes little sense to me that Lucasfilm would choose to spend more money making this into a series. Which, then makes less money by premiering on Disney+ instead of theatrical release. All this just because their gamble to make a Mando movie quickly backfired? I have trouble seeing all this, but I’m not the source and Daniel has a good hit rate.
