Rangers’ trip to face Manchester United in the Europa league was marred by fan trouble on the streets of Manchester. Thousands of Gers fans travelled to England as they prepared to face the Red Devils for the first time since November 2010 in a Battle Of Britain fixture. Fans had been urged not to travel for the match amid fears over Storm Eowyn. The Met Office issued red warnings nationwide, with 100mph winds expected up and down the UK over the next 24 hours. But that didn’t stop Rangers’ fans heading to Manchester and making their presence felt. It looked as though the Scottish giants were going to get a point when Cyriel Dessers expertly controlled a high ball before firing the ball past Man United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir on 88 minutes. But Ruben Amorim’s side had the final say as Bruno Fernandes slotted home a cross from the left in stoppage time. Man United’s win puts them firmly in contention to progress to the last eight of the Europa League, while Rangers now look destined to have to contend with a play-off round if they hope to advance.
