What is Progresso?
Progresso is a canned food brand that originated from the merger of two Italian import businesses in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1925, Frank R. Taormina and Vincent Taormina, who had traveled east to start a tomato import business, decided to merge with Joseph Uddo.
The success in tomato sales was so great that it exceeded their capacity to meet demand. This led them to raise funds to establish a larger-scale canning operation. Joseph Uddo provided the necessary funding in exchange for a stake in the company.
Thus, “The Uddo and Taormina Corporation” was formed, under which the Progresso label began marketing Italian-inspired canned products. Since 1949, the brand has primarily offered soups, olive oil, tomatoes, and beans, becoming a reference in its category.
