IKS Health Handles the Tasks Clinicians Get “Stuck With”

IKS Health has analyzed clinicians’ daily activities to uncover 16 tasks that clinicians get “stuck with” and that detract from their core task of patient care. In this interview, Sachin K. Gupta, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, explained that IKS Health has found solutions that relieve clinicians of all these burdens and have combined them into a single platform, in contrast to contracting with 10 or more companies to provide different parts of the solution.

Gupta says that IKS Health handles tasks throughout the patient journey. Typical tasks include clinical documentation, coding, processing messages (70% of which don’t require clinician involvement at all, he says), and handling prior authorization and denials.

The system combines automation with human intervention. AI is taking on more and more of the tasks, but for now there is still a human to handle the “last mile.” IKS Health offers clinicians a choice of how intensively to use their service: for instance, they can just ask to see an automated transcription of a patient visit. Alternatively, they can ask for some human clean-up, for structuring to facilitate coding, and even recommendations for actual coding to be bundled in.

Other services provided by IKS Health include revenue cycle management and scheduling optimization that is meant to reduce canceled visits and no-shows.  Gupta also shares some details about their Scribble Now suite which includes a breadth of solutions including an AI medical scribe (Check out this interview to learn more about ScribbleNow).

Gupta cites estimates that 15% of the $1.5 trillion U.S. health care market goes to the clinician tasks that IKS Health can partially automate. The healthcare system is not scaling well as more and more patients enter the market. Thus, he sees technology as critical to solve the three general problems of health care: cost, quality, and access.

Looking toward the future in health care technology, Gupta expects that someday AI can take over some functions entirely without human interaction. It will be used for problem identification and patient stratification.
