“Children of Blood & Bone” Sets Its Cast

Thuso Mbedu (“The Woman King”), Amandla Stenberg (“The Acolyte”), Damson Idris (“Snowfall”) and Tosin Cole (“Doctor Who”) have all scored the lead roles in filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood’s film adaptation of “Children of Blood and Bone” at Paramount Pictures.

The action fantasy film will be based on Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling novel. Adeyemi will adapt, pen the script, and executive produce the work, which is aiming for a theatrical release.

Mbedu will play Zelie, a young woman living in a fantasy African kingdom who embarks on a quest to reclaim the magic that the ruthless King Saran (Chiwetel Ejiofor) violently stole from her people.

The story follows Zelie and her older brother Tzain (Cole) as they form an alliance with the king’s daughter, Princess Amari (Stenberg), and son, Prince Inan (Idris), to resist his brutal rule.

Also starring are Viola Davis as Mama Agba, Cynthia Erivo as Admiral Kaea, Idris Elba as Lekan, and Lashana Lynch as Jumoke. In talks to join them are Regina King as Queen Nehanda, Diaana Babnicova as Folake and Bukky Bakray as Binta.

Published in 2018, the novel has seen two sequels and is now collectively known as the “Legacy of Orïsha” trilogy. The works have spent a combined 175 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, with almost three million copies sold worldwide, along with plenty of critical acclaim.

Additional castings from an open casting call for actors living in Nigeria will be announced later. Filming will kick off in South Africa in the coming weeks.

“Children of Blood and Bone” is scheduled for release on January 15th, 2027, with an IMAX release as part of the plan.
