Severance S2E4 Review – The Tallest Waterfall In The World

Well, here’s my Severance S2E4 review and this one was a bit special, so get ready to learn about the tallest waterfall in the World. Okay, we are not really gonna learn this amazing fact, you’ll have to watch for yourself to discover such knowledge. As usual, this is a FULL SPOILERS Review. If you’re not into that, here’s  quick summary of my thoughts.

Perhaps the most confusing episode that someone could watch as their first. You would literally be bamboozled and confused from start to finish. However, I love it and for those who are following the story closely there is simply a ton of OMG moments this week. Emotions are on display and two actors John Turturro and Britt Lower were phenomenal. Yet, there is a surreal aspect to Severance and this was perhaps one of the most surreal episodes we have had to date. Perfect for me then.

**Full SPOILERS Below!**

I love how we begin this episode with absolutley zero set up. We knew there was a field trip episode coming up from the trailers for S2. However, I admit I expected that farther down the line and with some set up. We finished last week with Mark starting reintegration. Then we start this week with Irving in the middle of nowhere in the ice and snow.

As is not unusual in Severance, we learn what the deal is alongside the Innies. Lumon has them on a team building thing, and it seems like they are in the middle of the wilderness. We discover this is where Keir Egan and his previously unheard of twin brother Dieter went walkabout. The most surreal part of the episode is the story of Keir and Dieter as it is read to the MDR crew as they walk from place to place. It’s all a bit wtf until they get to their camp, but I’m sure there’s some clues hidden in that weird story.

Once camp begins and Helly….. (okay, maybe not), laughs at the end of the Keir story things take a strange turn. Episode 4 focusses on Irving and Helly/Helena. Yes, we finally find out it’s Helena because Irving works it out whilst dreaming as he spends the night in supposedly sub-zero temperatures. Both Torturro and Lower are brilliant this week. Lower in particular now the cat is out the bag is able to play both Helena and Helly, truthfully and in pretend. Some of the Lower’s facial work is exquisite as a result.

Irving then forcing Milchick to bring back Helly was also brutal and dramatic. Meanwhile, the fallout from this is huge. Helena slept with Mark, twice, at least, but pretending to be Helly. Not only is that rape, but I get the feeling that this was Helena’s actual goal. Though why, I have no idea? The moment she saw Helly kiss Mark in the footage she looked intrigued.

Not only that, but the show tries to confuse us with what Helly says to Mark. That she lied about where her Outtie was because she was ashamed of who she was up there. Now, that’s something we would have expected Helly to say. It’s also the reason some fans figured meant it could be Helly the whole time. So that seems like Helena herself perhaps feels ashamed of who she is ‘up there’. Therefore, for some reason Helena wants to experience Helly’s life and seems to enjoy it. That’s a head spinner of a turn to process.

Also, what if she gets pregnant? How will Mark react, or Helly? If Irving is now fired, when do we see him again? So much to answer, and the first is why did Lumon go through all this in the first place? Was this planned by Helena just to sleep with Mark?

Theory Corner:

I think there are some details we should be paying attention to this week. | mentioned above about Helena’s motivations. However, I also think the answer coming to Irving in his sleep is a crucial clue. Is this why Irving’s Outtie was sleep depriving him in S1, to get a message to him? Is Burt involved in some way with all this? Was Irving telling Dylan to activate the OTC again with his final words being ‘hang in there’?

Is the story of Keir and Dieter literal, or is Dieter the dark part of Keir that he removed? Was it therefore Keir who masturbated in the forest loudly? If so, what does any of that actually mean? Also, who the hell were those ‘twins’ showing them the way? The showrunners have previously ruled out cloning as being the big secret. Therefore, it leads me to another theory.

I don’t think they were really out in the wild, but some kind of controlled reality. Surely if Irving fell asleep out there he’d have died of hypothermia during the night? He didn’t even do anything to shelter himself. It never snowed once, or any other weather. We only assume it was cold because of the clothes they are wearing. That could explain the doubles (not wearing warm clothes). It could also explain why the Outties were willing to go to the middle of nowhere and then be switched over, they were not.

I guess I would have to question why Irving was able to half drown Helena underwater? If this was ‘not real’ why would she panic and order Milkshake to switch on Helly? Therefore, I accept there’s holes in this theory. Perhaps I’m trying to close other holes with a theory which just adds more elsewhere?

Closing Thoughts

Surreal, beautifully shot, revealing, confusing and just bloody brilliant. One of the most unique TV series I’ve ever seen and they just keep us guessing so well. The acting is brilliant this week. This was such a unique episode being set outside, and it was brilliant.

GRADE A+

Best Episode of Season 2 thus far, which is saying something.
