Proton Porsche Tops Delayed, Rain-Hit Session Six
Neel Jani leads the way as weather impacts Sunday winning at Roar...
Proton Competition’s Neel Jani went quickest in a delayed and rain-hit sixth test session at the Roar Before the Rolex 24.
The No. 5 Porsche 963 led a 1-2 for the German brand’s customer GTP entries, with Jani’s best lap of 1:45.443 0.446 seconds quicker than the No. 85 JDC-Miller Motorsports machine piloted by Gianmaria Bruni.
Jack Aitken took third at the wheel of the No. 31 Action Express Racing Cadillac V-Series.R.
The penultimate session of the Roar weekend started over two hours later than originally planned after a full stop of on-track action was declared due to severe weather and the presence of lightning in the surrounding area.
Even after the weather improved, rain remained a constant factor throughout the session, which came to an end a handful of minutes early after the downpour again increased and made on-track running effectively impossible.
Prior to that, a number of cars struggled for traction in the treacherous conditions, including a Turn 2 spin for United Autosports’ Daniel Goldburg that caused a red flag with just under ten minutes to go.
Goldburg’s co-driver Paul di Resta led the LMP2 ranks at the wheels of the No. 22 Oreca 07 Gibson by posting a 1:49.870.
That left the Peugeot Hypercar driver 0.570 seconds clear of the No. 11 TDS Racing machine in the hands of Mikkel Jensen.
Ben Hanley slotted into third in the second United Oreca, with Job van Uitert fourth for Tower Motorsports.
Ollie Millroy was the fastest GT runner, topping GTD behind the wheel of the No. 70 Inception Racing Ferrari 296 GT3 after a 1:57.033.
Franck Perera’s No. 78 Forte Racing Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO2 was 0.209 seconds back in second, while Philip Ellis picked up third for Winward Racing.
Alexander Sims led GTD Pro aboard the No. 3 Corvette Racing by Pratt Miller Motorsports Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R, as his 1:57.672 put him behind the five fastest runners in GTD.
The Roar Before the Rolex 24 will wrap up with a Bronze-only session, set to kick off 2:30 p.m. ET.
