Patient-Centered Mobile Imaging – Akumin Shows How It’s Done

Getting an MRI is scary. Now imagine going for one in a narrow, noisy, and all-white semi-truck trailer. That is the current state of mobile imaging. Akumin is changing the game a line of patient- and staff-friendly units. Plus they have developed a solution that addresses the shortage of radiology technicians.

Joshua Seyler, Senior Director of Imaging and Remote Scanning at Akumin, gave Healthcare IT Today a tour of the company’s Akumin AXIS radiology outpatient cetner – a flexible, relocatable radiology/oncology unit that can be rapidly deployed. Seyler also spoke to Healthcare IT Today about their Command Center solution which allows radiology technicians to remotely operate equipment.

Key Takeaways

  1. Mobile Imaging, Minus the Stress. Akumin’s mobile units feel like traditional medical facilities, offering a comfortable and calming environment for patients.
  2. A Better Experience for Patients and Staff. The Akumin Axis units are designed around radiology workflows – creating a smoother experience for both staff and patients.
  3. No More Technician Shortages. The Akumin Command Center allows remote technologists to operate imaging equipment across the US, reducing staffing gaps and ensuring scans happen on time.

Better Workflow. Less Stress.

According to the company announcement, Akumin AXIS is designed/built in the United States and are a fully equipped Outpatient Imaging or Radiation Therapy Center supporting many modalities, including PET-CTs, Linear Accelerators, and MRIs (in-progress).  The spacious layout enables high-volume scanning, with 3 uptake rooms for tracer and theranostic infusions, i.e. radioligand therapies.

Their mobile units aren’t the cramped, noisy trailers that many associate with temporary imaging solutions. Instead, Akumin offers a mobile unit that feels like a permanent facility. Their units have spacious rooms, multiple dressing areas, and a calming environment designed to reduce patient anxiety.

“When you walk in, that stress just peels away,” said Joshua Seyler, Senior Director of Imaging & Remote Scanning at Akumin. “It’s a real medical environment, not a truck.”

Addressing Radiology Technician Shortage

Akumin is also addressing the radiology workforce shortage with its Command Center. This system allows expert technologists to remotely operate imaging equipment across multiple locations, ensuring that specialized scans can be performed even when local staff aren’t available.

“Within seconds, we can connect to any of our 180+ scanners and operate them remotely,” Seyler explained. “That means no scrambling to find a tech when someone calls in sick, no costly overtime, and no delays for patients.”

Imaging Doesn’t Have to be Inconvenient

By blending innovative mobile imaging with smart workforce solutions, Akumin is proving that imaging doesn’t have to be inconvenient. Their focus on both patient comfort and operational efficiency makes them an intriguing partner for hospitals and clinics looking to expand capacity without adding permanent infrastructure.
