Newcastle United are really motoring. 

A 3-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday made it six league wins on the bounce (and nine in a row in all competitions) for Eddie Howe’s team, who are right back in the conversation for Champions League qualification.

Newcastle have surged up the table over the last few weeks. The triumph over Wolves lifted them up to fourth in the standings. They are now just five points behind Arsenal in second.

After a difficult summer at St James’ Park, Newcastle underwhelmed at the start of 2024/25. After a 4-2 loss to Brentford in December, they found themselves way down in 12th place.

There was even talk back then that Howe might have taken the club as far as he could. Needless to say, no one thinks that any more.

Newcastle have found the right balance. Howe’s use of Sandro Tonali as a deep-lying midfielder rather than No.8 has proved to be a masterstroke. The engine-room trio of Tonali, Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes is as good as anything else the Premier League has to offer right now.

The defensive unit has been much more solid too. Newcastle have only conceded one goal in their last six games, having shipped 11 in their previous half-dozen encounters.

Finally, Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon are back to their best. Isak notched a brace against Wolves, meaning he has now scored 16 goals in his last 15 appearances in all competitions. 

The striker has also made the net ripple in eight consecutive Premier League games. Isak is no doubt eyeing the Premier League record of 11 matches set by Jamie Vardy in 2015/16.

After the victory over Wolves, Howe challenged his Newcastle players to become even better.

“Overall, [I] can’t be too picky, it is nine wins in a row. But we know we can play better, we did enough of the detailed work to get the win,” he said. 

“There’s a lot to be positive about and a lot to improve. There has to be more to come. That is the challenge we have to pose to the players now.”

Howe will be looking to see how his players respond to that message when Newcastle face his former club Bournemouth in the early kick-off on Saturday.

Bournemouth were seconds away from beating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, only for Reece James to score a last-gasp equaliser with a direct free-kick.

Still, Andoni Iraola’s side remain unbeaten since a narrow loss to Brighton & Hove Albion in November, since when they have gone nine Premier League matches without defeat. Only Liverpool and Arsenal have better records in that regard.

Bournemouth’s unbeaten streak will be severely tested at St James’ Park. Newcastle’s confidence is sky-high and they will look to use the home crowd to their advantage.

Newcastle are at their best when they play with intensity and dynamism, and Bournemouth will have to withstand some heavy pressure. This game is likely to be close, but we fancy the hosts to edge it.

Bournemouth are currently without Evanilson and Enes Unal, their two first-choice centre-forwards. Yet they still carry a substantial threat going forward.

Indeed, the Cherries hit five goals past West Bromwich Albion in the FA Cup last weekend, before scoring twice against Chelsea on Tuesday.

Both of their strikes at Stamford Bridge came after half-time. Bournemouth have now scored 21 goals in the second half compared to 11 between minutes one and 45.

It will not be easy for Bournemouth to breach a Newcastle backline that has looked rock-solid of late.

If they are to do so, though, there is a good chance it will happen in the second period. We fancy goals at both ends after the interval at St James’ Park.

Alexander Isak to score any time

Isak is in the form of his life. He is scoring goals at a better rate than any other player in the division right now, but that is not the only thing he brings to the table.

Isak is a fabulously gifted footballer whose velvet touch, smart link-up play, dribbling skills and passing ability make him a true all-rounder.

Bournemouth struggled to deal with Nicolas Jackson at times on Tuesday and Isak will cause them even more difficulties here.

Whether or not he can break Vardy’s record remains to be seen, but we do expect Isak to make it nine scoring games on the trot this weekend.
