Kuching road users urged to be more careful as autonomous rapid transit (ART) construction starts

With construction of the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) now underway, motorists in Sarawak’s capital have been urged to be more cautious on the road, the Borneo Post reported. In a statement, the project’s operator Sarawak Metro asked the public to be patient and understanding when approaching construction sites during this period.

“With various stages of the construction activities advancing simultaneously, members of the public are urged to prioritise road safety and adhere to all traffic management measures put in place during this critical phase,” it said.

The company’s CEO Mazli Mustaffa added that public cooperation is important to minimise disruption. “Safety is of utmost priority for us, and so we encourage everyone to stay informed and follow traffic management measures to ensure a smooth and safe journey for all,” he said.

Rather than relying on the usual trains, KUTS is made up of three autonomous rapid transit (ART) lines, including the 27.6 km Blue Line from Rembus in Samarahan to Hikmah Exchange, the 12.3 km Red Line from Kuching Sentral to Pending and the 30 km Green Line from Pending to Damai Central. These will all use hydrogen trackless trams as part of the state government’s push to be a leader in hydrogen power.

Construction of dedicated paths and a mix of elevated and at-grade stations will inevitably result in road closures and diversions, and Sarawak Metro said the public can get the latest information on these traffic disruptions on its official social media channels.

Us Malaysians are no strangers to road closures and diversions due to the construction of public transport networks – especially in the Klang Valley, which has seen numerous LRT and MRT lines and extensions being built up over the past decade and a half.
