Longtime Star Wars fans know this figure has roots that reach back further than the sequels, prequels, or even the original trilogy. ATHA PRIME, a villain inspired by unused Return of the Jedi concept art and planned as the antagonist for an unreleased 1980s Kenner toy line. Decades later, this forgotten piece of Star Wars lore is finally stepping into the spotlight in Marvel’s Star Wars: Jedi Knights comic series.
Under the guidance of Emmy-winning screenwriter and renowned Star Wars comics writer Marc Guggenheim, ATHA PRIME will make his canon debut as a ruthless planetary ruler who dares to challenge the Jedi Order and the Republic itself. Illustrated by rising star Madibek Musabekov, ATHA PRIME will appear on variant covers, including John Tyler Christopher’s Action Figure Variant and Ramon Rosanas’ stunning Foil Variant for Jedi Knights #1, hitting shelves on March 5, 2025.
“While developing the series, Marc discovered this deep cut—the antagonist from Kenner’s unrealized The Epic Continues toy line,” said Marvel Editor Mark Paniccia. “We saw the original design and were immediately sold. What a cool character to bring into canon and what a perfect book to do it in!”
Set before the events of The Phantom Menace, Jedi Knights is set to an era when the Jedi Order was thriving, free from the chaos of the Clone Wars. The series will feature iconic characters like Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Yoda, alongside fresh faces from the galaxy far, far away. Each issue promises a standalone adventure starring different Jedi duos as they confront an interconnected threat that looms over the entire Order.

Guggenheim shared his vision for the series, saying, “I love the idea that the Jedi are the guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy. But there are surprisingly few examples of that out there — mainly because the Jedi get sucked into the Clone Wars. I really craved seeing the Jedi doing their thing on a non-war footing. That’s the great appeal of this new Jedi Knights series: We get a chance to see what the Jedi did before the Clone Wars and their eventual fall.”
ATHA PRIME’s canonical introduction isn’t the only exciting aspect of Jedi Knights. Fans have been eagerly dissecting Rosanas’ “Sneak Preview” variant cover for Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #1, which teased ATHA PRIME’s arrival. Now, Marvel is pulling back the curtain with Musabekov’s detailed character design, offering a fresh look at the villain’s modern incarnation.
Preorders for Star Wars: Jedi Knights #1 are now open at local comic shops and through Marvel.com. Don’t miss your chance to see ATHA PRIME take his place in Star Wars history and witness a new chapter in the Jedi’s storied legacy.
