Disney+ aired its “Skeleton Crew” season finale last Tuesday to a relatively quiet reception.
As previously reported, the series experienced the lowest viewership of any “Star Wars” series premiere in its first week, with the first three episodes (the only ones charted so far) not making the Nielsen Top 10.
Although a second season would seem unlikely, showrunners Jon Watts and Christopher Ford have not stopped discussing the possibilities for the show’s future if it returns.
SPOILERS AHEAD FOR SEASON 1
A key part of the first season was At Attin, the forested planet of analysts and statisticians living isolated from the wider galaxy with the help of a protective barrier.
By the show’s end, the barrier is gone – opening up the world to the larger “Star Wars” galaxy. Watts tells Screen Rant that could come into play as not just the kids but an entire planet undergoes a major culture shock:
“We’ve sort of tracked out how we would want [the characters] to develop and grow up and where they would intersect in the larger galaxy. We definitely have ideas in mind.
It’s such a dynamic moment in the Star Wars timeline, and with At Attin having been this completely secluded planet that’s now suddenly thrust into it, it’s not just the kids growing up and fitting into it.
It’s like this whole new society suddenly having to get up to speed with what’s actually going on in the world. There are so many fascinating possibilities there.”
Watts also teased that the series contains an easter egg that nobody has spotted yet, admitting it’s a “hard one” and tied to his old YouTube channel waverlyflams. He also says people find Easter eggs that the makers didn’t put there but are happy to adopt: “We’re like, ‘Yeah, great.'”
The full eight-episode run of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” is available on the Disney+ service.
