A Republican authority figure has poured scorn on Selena Gomez’s tearful response to US President Donald Trump’s deportation measures, telling her to “go to congress”.

On Monday (January 27), the Emilia Pérez star and singer posted an Instagram story, recording herself in tears saying: “All my people are getting attacked … the children. I don’t understand. I’m so sorry. I wish I could do something, but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise”.

On Sunday (January 26), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported a record 956 people arrested. It comes after Trump took aggressive action over immigration in the country, signing a number of executive orders to implement his plans.

Gomez has been a vocal supporter of the rights of undocumented migrants, producing and presenting the 2019 documentary Undocumented and writing a piece for Time Magazine on her own family’s experiences crossing the border. She soon deleted the post after online criticism, posting another saying: “Apparently it’s not OK to show empathy for people”.

Speaking to Fox News, Trump’s border tsar Tom Homan reacted to the video by saying: “We’re gonna do this job, and we’re gonna enforce the laws of this country. If they don’t like it, then go to congress and change the law”.
