‘Totally ambidextrous’ – Bob Arum names the current world champion who beats Floyd Mayweather in his prime

Floyd Mayweather retired from professional boxing in 2017 with an unblemished 50-0 record. However, Top Rank chief Bob Arum believes Mayweather would have tasted defeat at the hands of switch hitter Terence Crawford if they had fought each other in their primes. Mayweather was virtually untouchable at his peakGETTY “Crawford [beats Mayweather] because Crawford fighting a guy his size, is unique,” Arum told ESNEWS. “The one thing that Crawford has that most other fighters don’t have is that he is totally ambidextrous. “So when he shifts from orthodox to southpaw he is equally effective either way.” Arum worked with both fighters during his legendary 40-plus-year career as a promoter. Mayweather turned over as a professional with Arum in 1996 but their relationship came to an acrimonious end 10 years later when ‘Pretty Boy Floyd’ bought himself out of his contract for $750,000. At the time, Mayweather was earning around $3million per fight, thanks to his perfect 36-0 record and status as the IBF welterweight champion. Yet he opted to cut ties with Arum as he felt he could earn bigger paydays as a free agent. This ultimately proved to be true, with ‘Money Mayweather’ living up to his moniker by banking nine-figure paydays against Manny Pacquiao and Conor McGregor at the back end of his career. Mayweather later described his choice to go at it alone, as the best investment he ever made. He said: “My philosophy is never stop getting it. Currency over legacy. Currency over legacy. However, the two-weight undisputed champion chose to cut ties after completing his contract following his win over Shawn Porter. Crawford later filed a lawsuit against Arum, alleging ‘racial bias’ on his former promoter’s part had damaged his career. Arum dismissed Crawford’s lawsuit as “frivolous” and stated that accusations of racism and racial bias were “reckless and indefensible”.
