The Black Keys Plot Summer Tour, New Album

After abruptly canceling a planned North American tour last May, the Black Keys are returning to the road in the territory starting May 23 in Durant, Ok. The duo of Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney are also planning to release a new album later this year through the former’s Easy Eye Sound and Warner Records.

The 2024 tour cancelation was the result of “a dispute with their former management company,” per a statement. Afterwards, “the consensus was, ‘Shit happens, and you just have to move through it.’ We were already on a creative streak, and the best thing we could do, rather than sit at home, was just go back in the studio,” Carney says. “Get back to work. So, that’s how the record started.”

More from Spin:

“Writing and recording has always been therapy for us, from the very beginning. We communicate best that way,” says Auerbach. “It has always been the thing that’s brought us together, so I’m not surprised at all that we ended up back there so quickly after the last album.”

The as-yet-untitled new album is said to contain an “eclectic, at times unexpected sound” with an emphasis on “grooves and danceability,” inspired by the duo’s vintage vinyl-soundtracked dance parties. “We’ve been collecting hundreds of these obscure records [for the Record Hangs], and the one thing they all have in common is that they have to work on the dance floor,” Auerbach says. “It’s really, really been focused on that, and you can definitely hear that influence in what’s coming.”

Hermanos Gutierrez and the Heavy Heavy will support on the summer North American dates, which are sandwiched between previously announced visits to South America and Europe. Tickets go on sale Friday (Feb. 7).
