One of last year’s most underrated albums (in my humble opinion) was Unwell, the debut album by Be Safe, the new band led by Matt Wojcik of late 2000s / early 2010s emo revivalists Perfect Future. You could feel some Midwest emo coming through, but mostly this was an album of sad, slow, somber songs that recalled singer/songwriters like David Bazan and Jason Molina. It’s now getting a vinyl release from Count Your Lucky Stars, who are co-releasing it with Best Brother Records in the US–with international releases from Fonoradar Records (Poland), Rufen Publishings (Japan), Slow Down Records (Norway), strictly no capital letters (UK), and Time as a Color (Germany)–and the vinyl release comes with one extra song, “To Suffer.”
“‘To Suffer’ is a song that comes from a deep place of sadness and to a degree, shame for me,” Matt tells us. “Lyrically, the song is about battling with mental illness and the collateral damage that comes from the process of learning to function and maintain relationships in healthier ways. It’s a terrible feeling and a terrible thing when it happens, but I think it’s also important to remember that it doesn’t always mean that it’s the end. From a music standpoint, this song came together extremely fast, and felt like a very natural direction for the band. We are very excited to finally be able to share it.”
“To Suffer” gets its online premiere in this post, and it’s another great one that fits perfectly on Unwell and carries the same emotional weight as all the previously-released tracks. If you like introspective, melancholic indie rock, don’t miss out on this.
