Arcadian director and Everything Everywhere All at Once VFX artist Benjamin Brewer is set to write and direct a live-action film adaptation of the hit Webtoon series Stagtown, per Variety.
The movie, adapted from creator Punko’s Webtoon webcomic, will follow “Frankie, Jeremy, and Felix as they discover something is terribly wrong in the town of Stagtown and attempt to escape the horrors that the residents spend every day ignoring.”
LuckyChap, the production company co-founded by Margot Robbie in 2014, and Wattpad Webtoon Studios Inc. are producing the live-action adaptation.
“Punko’s ‘Stagtown‘ has captured the obsession of the internet with its imaginative horrors and addictive mystery,“ Wattpad Webtoon Studios head of global film Jason Goldberg said. “We’re beyond thrilled to partner with LuckyChap, who tackle adaptations with singular filmmakers and undeniably bold ambition. We also couldn’t be more excited to bring the scares of ‘Stagtown‘ to life with Benjamin Brewer, an artist with an ingenious take on the source material that will make a generation-defining horror movie.”
The quote indicates that perhaps we shouldn’t expect a direct adaptation of the material.
The Webtoon’s official synopsis reads: “Something is wrong with the town Frankie grew up in. Hidden away from the world on the other side of an old stone bridge, the people of Stagtown spend every day trying not to see the strange things that go on around them. From the creator of Tokyopop’s best-selling OEM series comes the spiritual successor to Bizenghast.“ The series premiered in 2021 and ran for 108 episodes, amassing a solid fanbase for “its nightmare-inducing plot and eerie artwork.“
Stay tuned for additional details on Stagtown as they arrive.
