Sophia Kennedy announces new album, shares “Rodeo”

Baltimore-raised, Hamburg-based art-pop musician Sophia Kennedy has announced her third album, Squeeze Me, which will be out May 23 via City Slang. It’s her first in four years and she co-produced it with regular collaborator Mensa Reents. As to the title, she says the central theme of the album asks the question, “Are you embracing me or crushing me?”

Enticing first single “Rodeo” is low key but still decidedly groovy and danceable. “There’s a saying, ‘Don’t call us, we call you.’ That’s what Rodeo did. We didn’t call Rodeo, it called us,” Sophia says. “It wrote itself, immediate and direct. We’ve only ever played it live, with just piano and bass. Back in the studio, we gave it a groove and a psychedelic guitar. Rodeo is a journey into a dream-like state, perhaps a nightmarish one. It looks into a future with a lot of question marks. Rodeo doesn’t know where it’s headed, but I’m pretty sure it knows where it took off.”
