Serena Williams’ ex-coach pinpoints exactly what is wrong with Emma Raducanu in brutal analysis
Serena Williams’ former coach has offered a brutally honest critique of Emma Raducanu, stating that she should be a top 10 player. The British star shot to fame by winning the US Open in 2021, a success that suggested a career full of grand slam titles could be on the cards. Emma Raducanu has been critiqued by a legendary tennis coachAFP However a number of injuries and changes to her coaching team have led to a disjointed few years with the 22-year-old currently ranked 59th in the WTA rankings. Currently looking for another new coach after parting company with Nick Cavaday following her third round finish at the Australian Open, legendary coach Rick Macci – who famously coached Venus and Serena Williams as well as Andy Roddick and Maria Sharapova – believes that Raducanu will be to blame if she doesn’t fulfill her potential. In a series of posts on X, Macci said: “Emma is one hundred percent a top ten player. Emma is a great ball striker. Mentally Emma has been there done that. “Emma can beat anybody anytime anywhere including herself if she does not have the right proven voice and inner secret sauce. “There is a fine line between winning and losing. Key points and key moments. “Emma can flip the script because she has won and delivered on the biggest stage. “There is no doubt she can be top ten again but a new set of unique proven eyes is mandatory and wise. “Emma off the ground is rock solid. Serve bio-mechanically has become disjointed and back leg on her pinpoint is forward to soon creating improper loading. “This will SLOW the body down then de-accelerate the racquet especially on second serve and deliver freebies.” He then added: “You cannot teach talent. But you can teach what to do with that talent. Raducanu’s US Open win in 2021 feels like a long time agoAFP “Always remember in life and sports it is NEVER over unless you quit. “Emma mentally will figure this out and she can be top ten again I have zero doubt.” Macci then revealed that he was asked to coach Raducanu, saying: “Was asked about helping Emma. “If parents/team asked I would maybe guide/ help mold the mental /strategic and biomechanical part from here. “I am too busy to travel but I could rewire the serve and mindset and help set the table to eat her way back into the top ten.” Raducanu is next in action on Tuesday in the last-32 of the Abu Dhabi Open this week where she faces Czech star Marketa Vondrousova. This will be Raducanu and Vondrousova’s third career meeting, with both players winning one each in their previous encounters.
