And McIlroy enjoyed a brilliant start to the tournament, making a slam-dunk hole-in-one in his opening round. The northern Irishman and Shane Lowry are one shot behind leader Sepp Straka going into Sunday’s final round. Now, two courses are used – Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course – with the amateurs playing Thursday and Friday and the weekend’s final two rounds played by professionals only. This is because the event is now one of the PGA Tour’s lucrative Signature Events. The field will include 80 professionals and amateurs who will play in pairs. Each pair will play a round at Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill on Thursday and Friday before the weekend’s action is held at Pebble Beach only. There will be no cut in this event while the winning pro will receive 700 FedExCup points and the top prize of $3.6million. McIlroy made an incredible hole-in-one on the first day of play in the tournament on Thursday. Speaking afterwards, he said: “It’s such an elevated tee that the ball’s in the air and you know it’s on line but you don’t know whether to say, ‘Go!’ or ‘Sit!’ or ‘Spin,’ or ‘Release’. “You’re looking at it and you’re watching where it might land on the green and the thing just disappears. It was a good swing, a good wedge shot and it was obviously a nice little moment.”
