Samsung Galaxy S25 now supports seamless updates

Google first introduced seamless updates to Android back in 2016. Samsung first implemented the feature in the Galaxy A55 back in 2024. The good news is that Samsung is now applying it to their latest smartphones, the Galaxy S25 series, making it the first flagship phones from the company to support seamless updates.

We had previously heard rumors that this is something Samsung plans to do, and sure enough it looks like it finally happened. This is great news for Galaxy S25 owners who have been looking forward to the seamless updates feature. Just in case you’re unfamiliar, Android’s seamless updates, also known as A/B updates, allow your device to install software updates in the background while you continue using it.

This basically creates two separate partitions on your phone: one of which is active and the other one inactive. Whenever a new update is available, it is downloaded and installed on the inactive partition. Once the installation is complete, the phone seamlessly switches to the updated partition (hence the name) after a quick reboot.

Prior to the introduction of seamless updates, users would have to first download the update to their phones. You’ll then have to wait for the phone to reboot to complete the installation process. Sometimes this can take a while, depending on the size of the update. With seamless updates, most of the process takes place in the background. This reduces the overall downtime of your device.

There are also other benefits of seamless updates. If something goes wrong during the update, your phone can revert to the previous version on the other partition. This should reduce the risk of your device getting bricked.
