Fresh off the box office success of Nosferatu, a new take on a horror classic that itself was derived from a horror classic, you might be wondering what’s next from director Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Northman). Does he plan on bringing other classic monsters to the screen? Well, one thing we can say for sure is that you shouldn’t expect his take on Frankenstein.
On the show Conversations @ Curzon, Eggers recently spilled the beans that he actually did make a brief attempt to put his own spin on Frankenstein. Alas, it just wasn’t working out.
Eggers tells the show, “Sometimes you know you’ve got a dud. I’m super, super-excited for Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein. But when my son was born, I had an unconscious urge – I’m sure because of that – I started to try to do Frankenstein.”
“After two weeks,” Eggers continues, “I was like, ‘There’s no way I can do this. It’s impossible.’ So I’m glad that Guillermo is finally making his. No comment, but [mine] definitely sucked.”
Guillermo del Toro is indeed adapting Mary Shelley’s classic novel for Netflix, with the film expected to release sometime later this year. Jacob Elordi will be playing Frankenstein’s monster in del Toro’s movie, alongside Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, and Oscar Isaac.
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein follows scientist Victor Frankenstein, who plays god and brings a monster to life. The story has of course been adapted countless times over the years in film, television and beyond, and we can expect del Toro’s vision will be quite unlike any others.
Del Toro said of his longtime passion project way back in 2008, “The best moments in my mind of Frankenstein, of the novel, are yet to be filmed.” Stay tuned for more as we learn it.
The very first person to bring Frankenstein to the screen? Thomas Edison!
