It is no secret Microsoft‘s green gaming brand Xbox is spreading its game releases across several platforms. This includes the PS5 which has seen Xbox Game Studios releases like Minecraft and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 live on PlayStation platforms without any caveats.
It seems this shift in strategy from Microsoft is paying off as the company was the top games publisher in the world last month with $465 million spent on their games. This is partially thanks to PlayStation which was responsible for 64% of consumer spending on Microsoft games in December.
Over half of consumer spending on Microsoft games was on PlayStation formats
According to data firm Ampere (via Video Games Chronicle), Microsoft’s milestone is mostly due to Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 sales. The aforementioned 64% of consumer spending on Microsoft games in December for PlayStation formats was due to the latest entry in the popular shooter franchise. Xbox also saw the release of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle in that month.
Ampere’s data shows Electronic Arts just below Microsoft with $366 million during the same month. Most of that was generated by EA Sports FC 25, which underperformed in comparison to the year prior.
PlayStation currently have several Xbox first-party titles on its platforms. This includes Sea of Thieves, Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, and Grounded. It was also announced Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is coming to PS5 this Spring. Coincidentally, it was just announced Forza Horizon 5 will be coming to later this year.
Xbox boss Phil Spencer recently spoke to GamerTag Radio about their games showing up on more platforms. He confirms that Xbox games will find their way in “more and more place” in the future.
“Whether it’s cloud, whether it’s PC, whether it’s handheld, whether it’s phone, whether it’s PlayStation, even Nintendo,” Spencer said. “Expect our games to show up in more and more places.”
