The Edmonton Oilers are speaking out in support of their captain after Connor McDavid was dealt a three-game suspension on Monday.

“The Oilers organization is disappointed and we share in our fans’ frustration over the three-game suspension of our captain Connor McDavid,” the team said in a statement released Tuesday. “We support him through this process and the organization and our fans look forward to having him back in the lineup vs. Seattle next week.”
McDavid’s suspension was the result of an incident on Saturday night. The Oilers were down by one goal against the Vancouver Canucks in the final minutes of the game, with the visiting team looking to score a late equalizer. During that time, McDavid was tangled up with Canucks forward Conor Garland, who appeared to be holding the Oilers captain down in the high slot.
The two continued to jostle and McDavid, appearing frustrated that Garland was able to interfere with him without penalization, laid a cross-check up high to Garland.
McDavid was assessed a match penalty, which carries an automatic review by the league. His hearing with the department of player safety was held on Monday, after which they announced his three-game ban.

The statement comes hours after his Oilers teammates expressed frustration at the league’s decision, with defenceman Matthias Ekholm calling it “mind-blowing.”
“Why aren’t we protecting superstars?” Corey Perry questioned on Monday, per Sportsnet’s Mark Spector. “Every other league does it. They protect their superstars.”
During the ensuing McDavid-Garland scrum, Canucks defenceman Tyler Myers laid a similar cross-check to Oilers defenceman Evan Bouchard, for which he was also assessed a match penalty and three-game suspension.
The Canucks and Oilers will have their rematch, albeit without McDavid or Myers, on Thursday when they battle in Edmonton.
