Nintendo Officially Reveals Its Next-Gen Switch 2 Console

Nintendo has officially revealed its long-anticipated Switch 2 console, the sequel to its wildly popular Switch. Through a recently released video, the company showed off the new console's design and some of its functionality but left many questions unanswered: the Switch 2's price, release date, and software line-up for its launch all have yet to be revealed. The video does, however, give a handful of Easter eggs to Nintendo's community, both teasing a new Mario Kart and promising that more information will be revealed at a Nintendo Direct session on April 2.The video confirms many details that various leaks and rumors had swirled around over the past several years. Shape-wise, the Switch 2 is essentially a larger Switch, it features magnetic connections on its Joy-Cons and it also appears as if the Joy-Cons can be used as a mouse. When the Switch 2 does release, it'll end the nearly decade-long run of the original Switch — which was released in March 2017 — as Nintendo's flagship console. The original Switch was a wild success and was, as of October 2024, the third-best-selling gaming console of all time, behind only the Nintendo DS and Sony's PlayStation 2. The Switch 2's official debut came into more precise focus over the last 12 months, with Nintendo's CEO confirming that it would be announced within in a year back in March, then the company confirming that it would be backward compatible with original Switch games in November. Accessory pre-orders from third-party companies also indicated what the console may have looked like.To accompany the forthcoming April 2 Nintendo Direct session that promises to reveal more details about the console, Nintendo has announced "Switch 2 Experience" events globally. These events will be free to attend but require a Nintendo account.
