A legendary Argentine sci-fi story is making its way to the screen for the first time, as Netflix prepares to launch The Eternaut on April 30. This adaptation brings to life the groundbreaking 1957 graphic novel by writer Héctor G. Oesterheld and illustrator Francisco Solano López, a work that has captivated readers for decades.
Set in Buenos Aires, The Eternaut follows Juan Salvo and his friends as they struggle to survive after a mysterious, deadly snowfall wipes out much of the population. As they navigate this apocalyptic nightmare, they soon discover that the toxic storm is just the beginning—the Earth is under attack by a foreign force. Faced with an existential threat, the survivors realize that their only chance lies in unity and resistance, as no one can survive alone.
The series, directed and created by Bruno Stagnaro, promises to remain faithful to the spirit of Oesterheld’s original work while delivering a visually stunning experience. Stagnaro co-wrote the script alongside Ariel Staltari, ensuring that the adaptation honors the novel’s legacy while bringing it to a modern audience.
Leading the cast is Argentine actor Ricardo Darín, taking on the role of Juan Salvo. He is joined by a talented ensemble, including Carla Peterson, César Troncoso, Andrea Pietra, Ariel Staltari, Marcelo Subiotto, Claudio Martínez Bel, Orianna Cárdenas, and Mora Fisz.
The first season of The Eternaut will consist of six episodes, showcasing an ambitious production scale never before seen in Argentina. Filming took place from May to December 2023, utilizing over 35 real locations across Buenos Aires and more than 25 meticulously designed virtual production stages. This combination of practical and digital effects aims to capture the eerie, immersive world of the original comic.
