Today marks the start of a new feature piece, a monthly breakdown releasing on the first of each month going into the most notable releases in film, television and gaming for that month.
From what’s hitting cinemas and streaming services to what’s available to purchase on PVOD, VOD, gaming digital stores and more – this offers my Top 10 picks of the titles you should keep an eye out for along with a basic list of everything else coming.
1. “The White Lotus: Season 3” (Feb 16th – HBO)
Mike White’s resort-set social satire and black comedy anthology series heads to Thailand for its third season. Natasha Rothwell reprises her role and is joined by newcomers Walton Goggins, Parker Posey, Jason Isaacs, Michelle Monaghan, Carrie Coon, Scott Glenn, Sam Nivola, Leslie Bibb, Patrick Schwarzenegger, and Blackpink’s Lisa for a new season said to focus on spirituality.
2. “Cobra Kai: The Final Episodes” (Feb 13th – Netflix)
The beloved series comes to an end with the final five episodes of its sixth season releasing. The three-part final season has seen Johnny and Daniel take their students to the largest karate tournament in the world, the Sekai Taikai, and closing out its second part with a free-for-all dojo brawl ended rather shockingly. That will now be resolved with the action returning to the States to close out the story of Miyagi-Do.
3. “The Monkey” (Feb 21st – Cinemas)
Hot off the heels of his success with “Longlegs,” filmmaker Osgood Perkins returns with his darkly comedic and gory adaptation of the Stephen King short story about a cursed vintage toy monkey and the twin brothers who used to own it, discard it, and then find it coming back into their lives after a string of horrifying and inexplicable deaths take place. The movie’s first trailer was the most watched independent horror film trailer ever, racking up over 100 million views in three days.
4. “Zero Day” (Feb 20th – Netflix)
Robert DeNiro makes his major streaming series leading man debut in this six-part political thriller set in the wake of a devastating cyberattack on America. He plays a former U.S. President enlisted to investigate. Angela Bassett, Lizzy Caplan, Jesse Plemons, Connie Britton, Matthew Modine, Joan Allen, Dan Stevens and Clark Gregg co-star in the series which hails from “Narcos” showrunner Eric Newman and former NBC News president Noah Oppenheim.
5. “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie” (Feb 28th – Cinemas)
This marks the first original animated feature film of the “Looney Tunes” franchise to receive a worldwide theatrical release and reviews out of fest screenings have been excellent. In the film, a series of antics at the bubblegum factory lead to Daffy Duck and Porky Pig discover a secret alien plot to take over the Earth via mind-control. They must work together and try to avoid driving each other insane.
6. “Captain America: Brave New World” (Feb 14th – Cinemas)
This is a weird one. On the one hand, one of Marvel’s best was the second “Captain America” which was a political thriller that this one is trying to emulate as Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson must unravel a conspiracy tied to The Leader (Tim Blake Nelson) and his plans involving U.S. President Ross (Harrison Ford). On the other hand, the reports of reshoots makes approaching this one a tricky prospect. It will open big, but the discourse surrounding the film may be more interesting than the movie itself.
7. “The Gorge” (Feb 14th – Apple TV+)
“Sinister,” “The Black Phone” and “Doctor Strange” director Scott Derrickson tries his hand at this high-concept genre mashup blending sci-fi, horror, romance and action. Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller play two elite snipers are assigned a mysterious mission: to guard either side of a deep and impenetrable gorge, without knowing what lies beneath. The only question here is if Zach Dean’s script is up to snuff.
8. “Grand Theft Hamlet” (Feb 21st – VOD)
Set entirely within the world of “Grand Theft Auto Online,” the documentary film follows struggling actors Sam and Mark who find solace from lockdown isolation by staging a rendition of Hamlet within the game – easier said then done when you’re inhabiting a world where everyone takes joy in civil disobedience and mass murder.
9. “1923: Season 2” (Feb 23rd – Paramount+)
The new season of the “Yellowstone” prequel sees Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) embarking on an arduous journey home to Montana while Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer) sets off on her own trans-Atlantic journey. Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) warns about how the family’s way of life is under attack while his wife Cara (Helen Mirren) readies her rifle for the fight.
10. “Running Point: Season 1” (Feb 27th – Netflix)
Mindy Kaling’s new comedy series, co-created with Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen, deals with a family-owned Los Angeles professional basketball franchise. Kate Hudson plays the often overlooked sister in a family who must take over as president after her brother is forced to resign following a scandal.
