Nearly thirty years on, Matthew Lillard is returning to the “Scream” franchise for the upcoming “Scream 7” at Spyglass/Paramount. The actor revealed the news on his Instagram account, hand writing out one of Stu’s most famous lines from the film.
Lillard played Stuart ‘Stu’ Macher in the original 1996 film, one of the two killers in the movie alongside Skeet Ulrich’s Billy Loomis. Ulrich reprised his role in 2023’s “Scream VI” via visions that utilised de-aging visual effects.
How Stu will return for the new one isn’t so clear. The character was last seen having been stabbed multiple times and then had a large CRT TV slammed on his head, which electrocuted him.
This all follows on from this morning’s news that Scott Foley will reprise his role of Roman Bridger from “Scream 3” here, meaning at least two dead killers from past entries are returning here.
The actor joins fellow legacy cast members Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy Brown and Foley alongside newcomers Isabel May, Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, Sam Rechner, Anna Camp, Joel McHale and Mark Consuelos.
Franchise creator Kevin Williamson is directing from a script by Guy Busick. James Vanderbilt, William Sherak and Paul Neinstein are producing.
Production is currently underway with “Scream 7” opening in cinemas February 27th 2026.
