Teddy Sheringham ‘wouldn’t be surprised’ if Manchester United made ‘two big signings’ before the January transfer deadline and says his former club should hijack Arsenal’s move for Alexander Isak.

United’s wildly inconsistent form continued on Saturday as Ruben Amorim’s side were beaten 3-1 by Brighton at Old Trafford.

Manchester United held Premier League leaders Liverpool to a 2-2 draw at the start of the month before knocking Arsenal out of the FA Cup despite playing for an hour with ten men.

The Red Devils then scored three late goals to avoid an embarrassing defeat to bottom-placed Southampton but any momentum that was being built was halted by Brighton.

United’s defeat – their fourth in six league games – leaves the fallen Premier League giants just 13th in the table, closer to the relegation zone than the Champions League places.

Amorim was expected to wait until the summer to invest in his squad but may be tempted to dip into the January market given the club’s underwhelming form.

Ex-United striker Sheringham can envisage his former club landing ‘two big signings’ before the transfer deadline and says Isak would be a ‘perfect’ addition to Old Trafford.

Isak has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal but Newcastle are reluctant to lose the striker and value him at more than £100m.

‘I wouldn’t be surprised to see two big January signings at Manchester United,’ Sheringham told BoyleSports.

‘I think United need to rebuild, but it’s hard to get big names and proper players in the January window.

‘I think it’s a time to work in the background and look for players to start next season. I’d like to see big signings but it’s going to be difficult.

‘United just need an overall upgrade. They have good players but not top players. People were picking combined XIs with Liverpool last week with not a single United player in there.

‘That is unheard of when you think about the last 30 years. When top players became available, United used to go out and break the bank to get them.

‘That isn’t the case at the moment. There is a massive rebuilding job to do.’

On Isak, who has scored 15 goals in the Premier League this season and 16 in his last 17 appearances in all competitions, Sheringham added: ‘Manchester United is still a massive draw for any player and playing for the club is still a highlight of anyone’s career.

‘Would Alexander Isak consider joining United if a bid came in? Without a doubt. I’m not saying a deal will get done but he would be the perfect signing for United.

‘He can lead the line and score goals and could be a statement signing for the new regime. He is full of confidence at the moment and could lead by example.’

Manchester United have been linked with a move for Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres since Amorin left the Portuguese giants to take over at Old Trafford.

Gyokeres, 26, has scored 76 goals in 81 appearances for Sporting since being signed by Championship side Coventry City in 2023.

United’s current forward options include £72m signing Rasmus Hojlund, who has scored just two league goals this season, and Joshua Zirkzee, who is being linked with a move away less than six months after joining.

Amorim’s side return to Europa League action on Thursday night against Scottish giants Rangers, before facing Fulham next weekend.
