Luna Luna was a high-concept art-project / carnival that was staged in 1987 and featured rides and attractions created by some of the most famous artists of the era, including Keith Haring Jean-Michel Basquiat, Salvador Dalí, Roy Lichtenstein, Arik Brauer, Sonia Delaunay, Monika Gil’Sing, André Heller, David Hockney, Kenny Scharf, and more. It was only ever staged once in Hamburg, Germany and then the rides sat forgotten about in shipping containers in Texas for over 30 years.

The Luna Luna rides were rediscovered and, thanks in part to Drake, restored and are currently being staged at NYC’s The Shed in Hudson Yards, with added attractions and a soundtrack of new original music from David Byrne, André 3000, Tune-Yards, Jamie xx, Philip Glass and many others. Sadly, you can’t ride the rides this time around but you can wander through Dalí’s Dalídom funhouse and Hockney’s Enchanted Tree piece, and there are other interactive activities in the spirit of the original art, with actors dressed up in costumes and a play room for kids that makes it fun for all ages. There’s also a lot of history to read on the walls with accompanying photographs and video, and a very cool gift shop. Most of all, the ability to see these works that were almost entirely forgotten about a decade ago, is pretty amazing.

Luna Luna is open Tuesdays through Sundays at The Shed now though February 23. Tickets are on sale and you can check out a few videos about Luna Luna below.
