I loved playing for Jerry Jones’ Cowboys, approaching my former teammate Deion Sanders was genius
The Dallas Cowboys are somehow dominating the news cycle despite missing out on the playoffs. Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Jalen Hurts, and Jayden Daniels are the last four quarterbacks standing in the race to the Super Bowl. Jerry Jones is looking for a new head coachGetty Meanwhile, Cowboys signal-caller Dak Prescott is wondering who his next head coach will be as he bids to recover from the injury that ended his 2024 season. Thanks to owner Jerry Jones‘ media mastery, that question is also on the lips of broadcasters up and down the country with America’s Team living up to its name. Deion Sanders is among the candidates and analyst Jason Bell, who played alongside Primetime in Dallas, loves the match. “I got to love Jerry Jones. Love him. Played for him,” he told talkSPORT. “Remember conversations we had like it was yesterday just because of his charisma. “It’s amazing. A guy that’s not in the playoffs has stolen the news cycle again. This is the magic of Jerry Jones. “All of a sudden, it’s the Dallas Cowboys and what they’re going to do. It’s genius by him. And throwing in Deion Sanders, Primetime, into that conversation, I mean it explodes as far as the media is concerned. “Do I think it’s going to happen? I don’t know, but I love that they are really having this conversation right now.” Coach Prime has excelled in college football but there are doubts over whether his skills will translate at the next level. Not from where Bell is sitting. “I think if you doubt Deion Sanders, you haven’t looked at his track record and who he is and what he is and how he goes about his business, period,” he explained. Sanders took the Colorado Buffaloes to the brink of the playoffsGetty The Hall of Famer is an icon in DallasGetty “Deion Sanders believes in himself. He’s confident in himself. He knows what he’s doing. “He knows how to relate. And one thing about Deion is, he knows he is the engine, Deion’s the story. And that helps. It works, especially when you’re trying to command a room. “So do I doubt Deion Sanders? Never. My favorite player ever. I’ve been to his house when I was young. When I first got to Dallas, I went to his house and was starstruck. I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m in Deion Sanders’ house.’ I would never doubt anything he does.” Bell was signed as an undrafted free agent by Jones in 2001 but ended up being waived a year later and joining the Houston Texans – a move Jones regretted and produced a hilarious anecdote. “My favorite [conversation with Jones] is when he lied to my mom,” Bell revealed. “He lied to my mama because he came to my mom – I think it was at the Christmas party – he goes, ‘Miss Bell, I love your son. He’s going to be a Dallas Cowboy for a long time.’ Then he traded me the next year. “Jerry used to come to practice. He was so approachable. What other owner do you call him by his first name? You could go up to him and have a conversation. “I remember when I didn’t play there I saw him one time in Vegas and he was like, ‘Man, you were a mistake. I shouldn’t have made that mistake.’ “Just that kind of stuff, it’s Jerry Jones. He’s so great for the league. “We had other private conversations that I remember, like when he got rid of me. He looked at me. I was smiling and he said, ‘That smile. I’ll never forget that smile.’ “It was like, ‘This is going to pain me. This is going to be a mistake I make.’ But it was the smile, because he could see on my face I should have been there. I was a Cowboy in his mind, but had to go.” As the playoff action rages all around, the Cowboys’ search for Mike McCarthy’s replacement will continue to dominate the airwaves.
