John Bonham died aged 32 on September 25, 1980 from asphyxiation by vomit. He was found dead by John Paul Jones and Led Zeppelin tour manager Benji LeFevre at Jimmy Page’s house in Clewer, Windsor.
On the day prior to his death, Bonham was drinking heavily during rehearsals. After the band retired to Page’s house, Bonham fell asleep after midnight and was taken to bed and placed on his side. His body was found unresponsive at 1.45pm the next day.
An inquest into Bonham’s death found he had vomited and choked, with his death ruled as accidental. An autopsy found no other recreational drugs in his system.
He was cremated and his ashes interred on 12 October, 1980 at St. Michael’s Church, Rushock, Worcestershire.
Why did Led Zeppelin disband?
The remaining members of Led Zeppelin – Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and Robert Plant – chose to disband on December 4, 1980 following John Bonham’s death.
A statement at the time read: “We wish it to be known that the loss of our dear friend and the deep respect we have for his family, together with the sense of undivided harmony felt by ourselves and our manager, have led us to decide that we could not continue as we were.”
In the years since his death, the band have sporadically performed together over the years, most notably at the Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert on December 10, 2007.
