High-Profile Trio Wanted For “9 to 5” Remake

Sydney Sweeney (“Immaculate”), Zendaya (“Challengers”) and Ariana Grande (“Wicked”) are reportedly at the top of the casting wish list for the upcoming remake of the 1980 workplace comedy classic “9 to 5”.

Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin starred in the original as secretaries who watch themselves passed over for promotions and their ideas getting stolen in a culture of rampant sexual harassment.

When their sexist, narcissistic, lying bigot of a boss (Dabney Coleman) blackmails one into sleeping with him, the trio kidnaps and keeps him tied up as they uncover his embezzlement scheme and a way to cash in.

The news came in April last year that former “Friends” actress Jennifer Aniston is set to produce a reimagining of the film for 20th Century Studios, with Diablo Cody working on the latest script draft. Kristin Hahn also produces.

According to Life & Style magazine, Aniston’s commitments to Apple TV+ series “The Morning Show” are done for the moment so she’s turned her attention to this:

“With another season of The Morning Show in the can, Jen is focused on getting her 9 to 5 remake in shape and it’s looking increasingly like Jen will be starring in the film in addition to producing it. The script is looking good and so Jen is now turning her attention to recruiting some next-generation talent into the project, and there’s only a handful of names on her list that can add to the momentum of the project.”

Those three names are cited as they have “proven they can do comedy and bring their own fan bases into film projects.” However, scheduling is going to be a big problem:

“Sydney and Zendaya are heavily booked for the next twelve months and Jen wants to make this movie next year if she can. The 9 to 5 remake isn’t technically green-lit yet [by Disney-owned Twentieth Century Studios] but getting a ‘yes’ from one of these actresses, and making them permanent members of ‘Team Aniston’ is the key step that Jen is undertaking right now.”

The film is reportedly said to be a special one for Jen and an important one to her growing up. She has been rolling with the project for several years now, including a failed attempt to get it off the ground back in 2018.
