Google’s Pixel A-series models have always been among the more impressive phones in the entire Pixel lineup, due to a combination of relative affordability and access to all the essential Pixel features, and that’s not including the amazing camera performance that can even outshine certain flagship devices out there.
As such, it’s only a matter of weeks now before Google launches the Pixel 9a, which takes over for the Pixel 8a from 2024. The 9a is a culmination of several years of Pixel A-series evolution, which started with the launch of the Pixel 3a from several years ago. With that said, it packs a lot of improvements over older models, which we think might be enough to sway buyers who are looking to get a capable midrange smartphone.
Newer Camera Hardware
One of the biggest reasons to get a Pixel smartphone is the terrific camera performance, made possible by Google’s impressive computational photography. With that in mind though, hardware still plays a part – while the Pixel 7a and 8a featured high-resolution 64MP main cameras, the lenses were physically small which did affect low-light performance, for example.
That said, it’s expected that Google will be equipping the Pixel 9a with a newer 48MP main sensor. A bit lower in terms of overall resolution, but a physically-larger sensor does wonders for exposure and dynamic range, to name a couple.
Improved Tensor Chip
The Pixel 9a will reportedly feature the Tensor G4 chip, the same one used in the Pixel 9 series phones. While it’s not as powerful as the latest SoCs from Qualcomm and MediaTek, the Tensor G4 is still an impressive upgrade thanks to better device thermal management, improved battery endurance, and slightly-better performance compared to its predecessors.

Larger Battery
The Pixel 9a will also feature a larger battery this time around. Earlier A-series Pixel phones somewhat held back when it came to battery capacity, but it’s predicted that the Pixel 9a will feature a 5,100 mAh battery, which easily outsizes the smaller 4,492 mAh cell found inside last year’s Pixel 8a, which itself is larger than the on in the Pixel 7a, and so on. It’s also larger than the 4,700 mAh battery inside the Pixel 9.
Software Updates
Starting with the Pixel 8 phones, Google has increased its number of yearly updates to a total of seven years, meaning that you’ll be able to hold onto your phone for a long time, much longer than most other brands on the market at the moment. We can bet that this update policy will also be applicable to the Pixel 9a, similar to the Pixel 8a’s seven years of major Android updates.
Similar Pricing
Finally, the Pixel 9a will reportedly be priced at $499, similar to the Pixel 8a. This is great news as Pixel fans looking to upgrade from an older device need not spend too much for a midrange device. There is a more expensive $599 variant, which will come with 256GB of internal storage, instead of the 128GB on the standard model.
