Hasbro Entertainment is reportedly collaborating with Legendary Entertainment to create a screen universe based on its “Magic: The Gathering” game franchise.
The shared universe aims to span film and television with the first effort being a major film adaptation.
First introduced in 1993 by Wizards of the Coast, the role-playing fantasy game became the forerunner of the trading card game movement and a schoolyard staple in the 1990s.
Involving wizards, creatures, weapons and spells that have various levels of strength, certain cards were quite rare, which made them valuable commodities on the collector’s market. The game has reportedly reached 50 million players.
Hasbro already has a “Magic: The Gathering” TV series set up at Netflix with former “Star Trek: Picard” showrunner Terry Matalas. A previous attempt to adapt the property into a film was made a decade ago but it never got out of early development.
Mary Parent, Legendary’s chairman of worldwide production, says in a statement: “We pride ourselves on being thoughtful caretakers of singular, beloved IP, and no property better fits that description than Magic: The Gathering. Alongside the fantastic Hasbro team, we look forward to creating a multimedia universe that thrills longstanding fans and creates a broad wave of new ones.”
Legendary is behind the “Godzilla x Kong” and “Dune” films as well as the upcoming “Minecraft” film at Warners.
