Google’s Identity Check Feature is Impressive, but How Effective Will it Be?

A while back, Google announced the arrival of the Theft Protection feature for select Android devices, which adds an extra layer of security to user data should they lose physical access to their phone by less than legal methods. With that in mind, Google recently announced that it’s now rolling out “Identity Check” for select Pixel and Samsung Galaxy models running one One UI 7.

When activated, Identity Check will require users to confirm biometric authentication should they need to access sensitive data whenever outside “trusted” locations. Google adds that the feature will enable enhanced protection for Google Accounts on supported devices, adding another level of protection against threat actors.

Users can choose one or more trusted locations once Identity Check is enabled – when away from these locations, biometric authentication will be required for account and device settings, and changes to other security methods on one’s phone.

Google says that Identity Check will begin rolling out to Pixel phones running on Android 15, to be followed by One UI 7 eligible Galaxy devices in the coming weeks; more brands will receive the feature throughout the coming months as well.
