“Flight Risk” Tops Quiet Box Office Weekend

Mel Gibson’s “Flight Risk” has topped what’s tipped to be one of the worst weekends at the box office this year, with the combined total of all films pulling in just $63 million.

The Mark Wahlberg-led “Flight Risk” will come out on top with $11-12 million for the three days and gives Lionsgate a second #1 this year following “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera”. The film has been not just widely rejected by critics, but audiences too with the title earning a woeful C CinemaScore.

It’s still doing better than Steven Soderbergh’s “Presence,” the supernatural thriller that received fairly good reviews but has been dubbed a flop by audiences, with a C+ CinemaScore and poor PostTrak results. The title had its debut in sixth place with $3.1 million for the weekend.

In second place was Disney’s still powering on “Mufasa: The Lion King” which took in $8 million in its sixth weekend and has now taken in around $220 million domestically.

Third was “One of Them Days,” which dropped just 39% in its second weekend and earned a $7.2 million take. Rounding out the top five were “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” which earned $5.1 million, and “Moana 2,” which earned $4 million.

Last week’s horror film Wolf Man fell to seventh place in its second weekend, with a $3 million haul that was a 72% drop from its debut.

“The Brutalist” had its major expansion into over 1,100 cinemas – but funnily enough, it made little difference – its $2 million weekend haul up just 2% compared to last weekend despite being on around three times as many screens and coming off a Golden Globes win.

Faith-based Jared Harris-led drama “Brave the Dark” fizzled with just $2.2 million at start, not even cracking the top ten.
