‘Fire him after the game’ – Nick Sirianni heavily criticized but survives as Eagles prevail
The Philadelphia Eagles survived in the snow. And potentially saved head coach Nick Sirianni’s job in the process. That’s because the game seemed to be over with the Eagles up 28-15 after what looked to be a game-clinching 78-yard run by Saquon Barkley. However, after a quick touchdown drive led by Matthew Stafford to get the Rams within six, all hell almost broke loose. The Eagles needed just one first down to effectively end the game, and with Barkley on an all-time heater, it seemed inventible. That is until offensive coordinator Kellen Moore called for a less than 100% healthy Jalen Hurts to roll out with the ball, taking it out of Barkley’s hands, which resulted in a sack and subsequent fast three-and-out. All of Philly’s frustrations were placed directly on Sirianni, even though it wasn’t his play call. Such is life as the head coach. It got even dicier as Stafford drove the Rams inside the Eagles’ 20-yard-line, but then Jalen Carter happened. Carter took over the waning moments of the game, with a sack and pressure, putting an exclamation point on a dominant performance and the Eagles defense held strong. The Eagles survived in the snow. Sirianni now owns 52 career wins through his first four seasons as head coach, including the postseason. That is second all-time by any coach through four seasons in NFL history. Only George Seifert had more with 57, as his great San Francisco 49’ers teams that consisted of Joe Montana, Jerry Rice and Steve Young led the way. Again, not bad. Sirianni’s job was never in jeopardy, but for a city and fanbase as proud as Philadelphia, there always seems to be a bit of uneasiness in the air. But now they can all breathe a sigh of relief, at least for one more week. Next Sunday afternoon Sirianni and the Eagles will welcome the Washington Commanders to town with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line. One more win for Sirianni and he’ll be going to his second Super Bowl in three years. Once more, not bad. Cut the guy some slack Philly.
