Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has plenty of pressure to succeed. The eighth installment of Tom Cruise’s superspy franchise based on Bruce Geller’s classic television series could be the global icon’s last turn as Ethan Hunt. So director Christopher McQuarrie is already teasing a death-defying stunt like nothing the previous installments have seen.

Speaking to Empire Magazine (via GamesRadar) about The Final Reckoning, McQuarrie teased how “the most difficult thing” ever accomplished in the series resulted in an extreme test audience reaction.

“We had a small screening and someone said, ‘I was suffocating throughout the entire sequence. I almost had a heart attack.’ And I thought, ‘I guess we did something right.’”

The Mission: Impossible franchise has become a showcase for Cruise executing his jaw-dropping stunts. From the iconic vault sequence from the initial 1996 installment to the motorcycle jump of a canyon in 2023’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Cruise loves to please his audience. While McQuarrie did not get into specifics about the “suffocating” sequence, the film’s teaser trailer features Hunt in a biplane action scene and an underwater sequence unlike anything done before.

The Final Reckoning was shot back-to-back with Dead Reckoning. Not only did it have to contend with production delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic but it also saw a budget go as high as $400 million. The previous installment’s box office suffered because of the Barbieheimer phenomenon with Barbie and Oppenheimer dominating the screens in 2023. Though The Final Reckoning as Cruise’s swan song from the franchise has not been confirmed, the teaser hints at significant callbacks to previous entries, including a particular MacGuffin that was never fully explained.

Returning with Cruise for the latest Mission: Impossible are Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and Vanessa Kirby. Angela Bassett makes her return as Erika Sloane from 2018’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout after being written out of Dead Reckoning. New additions to the franchise include Hannah Waddingham, Nick Offerman, Janet McTeer, Holt McCallany, and Katy O’Brian.
