The team behind Avowed have shared three tracks from its gorgeous soundtrack – check them out exclusively on NME below.

Avowed is an epic, fantasy role-playing game from Obsidian. A spin-off from their Pillars Of Eternity franchise, the action takes place in the Living Lands, “a mysterious island filled with adventure and danger”.

“As an envoy of Aedyr, you are sent to investigate rumors of a spreading plague with a secret that threatens to destroy everything,” teases the game’s synopsis. “Can you save the island and your soul from the forces threatening to tear them apart?”

Venus Theory’s soundtrack for Avowed is just as majestic, with traditional orchestral moments making way for music that takes influence from Indian, Chinese, Greek culture and beyond. “Getting the opportunity to learn from and work with the studio behind some of my favourite games and scores, while also getting to score one of their games myself and creating an immersive soundtrack experience is such a whirlwind of a gig,” composer Venus Theory said. “I can’t wait to share the music and sonic worlds we’ve been working on together and see my take on The Living Lands and the world of Eora out in the wild.”

If you think that sounds good, you can get an early taste of three tracks – ‘Avowed (title theme)’, ‘Soil Song’ and ‘We Twine’ (end credits song)’ – below.

“A sonic introduction to the themes and world of Eora as presented in Avowed, with some clever nods to major character themes and story moments that you’ll discover as you experience the game,” Venus Theory said about the title theme. “As with the shift in perspective players experience in Avowed, the title track leans into the new and innovative sonic palette that provides the signature sound of Avowed while retaining the same ‘fantasy’ leaning tone.”

“In my mind, ‘Soil Song’ is one of the ‘peak Avowed‘ moments that the studio and I set out to capture the sound of ‘fantasy’ without being ‘generic fantasy’,” Venus Theory told NME. “Delicate and evolving soundscapes underpin the flowing and almost lachrymose lead lines provided against a distinctive orchestral foundation blending the sounds of traditional folk and unique regional instruments to showcase the culture and ‘sound’ of the Living Lands.”

He added: “The end credits track plays into the idea that the end is just the beginning of whatever players decide is next for the world of the Living Lands. Combining many elements you hear throughout the game, the track acts as both a reprisal of various sonic signatures and a flourishing capstone to their story and choices in-game.”

Avowed is out February 18 for Xbox Series X/S, PC and Xbox Game Pass while the soundtrack will be hitting streaming services from February 11. Pre-save it here.
