‘The league doesn’t like me’ – LA Lakers star launches astonishing on Victor Wembanyama ‘narrative’ as awards fury builds
Los Angeles Lakers’ star Anthony Davis is convinced the league will never honor him. The 2020 NBA champion recently gave an interview into ESPN, in which he spoke about the coveted Defensive Player of the Year award he has never won in his career. Anthony Davis (right) recently gave an interview to ESPN There are not many better defensive players than Davis, a bone fide superstar and his value to the Lakers is measured by the impact on them when he does not play. Despite this, Davis has never claimed the DPOY prize and he smade no attempt to hide his dissatifaction. “The narrative is being pushed for Wemby to get it,” Davis told the broadcaster. “Obviously he’s averaging what like four blocks or something crazy like that, but then it goes back to are we talking about just blocks? I don’t know how anything works anymore.” The 31-year-old then explained how he has led the league in multiple metrics that are crucial to the award’s selection. Davis has led the league in blocks multiple times in his career, topping the category in 2014, 2015 and 2018, with the award typically going to rim protectors who anchor defensively while blocking. “When I first got into the league, (DPOY) was awarded to the big that blocked shots, who led the league in blocks. I mean, I’ve done that three times early on in my career,” the power forward said. “And it didn’t come to me right? … I’m p***** I don’t have one for sure because I know how much I put on the defensive end.” Davis went on to add that despite his apparent anger he does not care about the accolade anymore. “There’s nothing that I can’t do defensively,” he said. Victor Wembanyama has enjoyed a stellar second season in the NBA so far “I can switch one-through-five. I’m one of the best at guarding pick-and-rolls, an elite rim protector. Whatever you need me to do defensively, I can do.” “I honestly just stopped caring about it. But I’m not sure why I haven’t received one yet, even though I’m in a conversation about it every year. At this point, I’m kind of just over it. I’m focusing on winning a championship.” It was not long before his interview with Charania that Davis told Dave McMenamin of ESPN that the league does not approve of him, saying: “They’re not giving it to me. The league doesn’t like me. “I’m the best defensive player in the league. I can switch 1 through 5. I can guard the pick-and-roll the best in the league, from a big standpoint. I block shots. I rebound.“ Davis knows his value is towards winning a championship and his defensive qualities will be vital to the Lakers hopes on what at the start of the season would have been deemed an unlikely title. When he was on the court last season, Los Angeles held opponents to 60 percent on layups and dunks, good for the ninth-best percentage league-wide. Although, when Davis sat on the bench, that number jumped up to 65 percent, which would have been good for 29th around the NBA. The Lakers currently sit fifth in the Western Conference as they look to secure a playoff position in the final months of the season.
