Watch Timothée Chalamet bring out James Blake & perform Bob Dylan deep cuts on SNL

Just days after the Timothée Chalamet-starring Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown picked up eight Oscar nominations, Timothée himself continued to support the film by pulling double duty as host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live (1/25). He performed Bob Dylan songs, but instead of playing the widely-known songs that he performs in the film and on its soundtrack, he chose three deeper cuts. “You might not know the Bob Dylan songs I’m performing,” he said during his opening monologue, “but they’re my personal favorites.”

His first performance was a rockin’ full-band version of “Outlaw Blues” from 1965’s Bringing It All Back Home, the album that lit the first spark for the “Electric Dylan” controversy that A Complete Unknown uses as its climax, and he turned that into a medley with “Three Angels” from 1970’s New Morning, for which Timothée brought out James Blake for piano and backing vocals.

His second performance was a solo acoustic performance of “Tomorrow Is a Long Time,” the early ’60s Dylan song that wasn’t officially released until a live recording from 1963 at New York’s Town Hall was released on 1971’s Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits Vol. II. For all three performances, Timothée made the songs his own, and unlike in the film, he wasn’t playing dress-up as Dylan. He brought just as much of his own flair to his outfits as he did to the music.
