Fans of HBO’s True Detective, especially the iconic first season, should get ready for a surprise.
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have reprised their roles as detectives Rust Cohle and Marty Hart, respectively, for a new four-minute advertisement that aims to promote film and TV production in the U.S. state of Texas.
The ad was written and directed by series creator Nic Pizzolatto and also has three other actors who originally hail from Texas – Dennis Quaid, Billy Bob Thornton, and Renée Zellweger. The ‘True to Texas’ ad aims to try and turn the Lone Star State into a major hub for film production.
The on-screen reunion comes eleven years after that first season debuted on HBO. Directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, the eight-episode run was widely acclaimed by critics and won numerous awards, including a Primetime Emmy and a Golden Globe Award.
As it’s an anthology series, subsequent seasons featured all new casts. The second proved divisive, the third had little viewership, but last year’s Alaska-set fourth season ‘Night Country’ scored acclaim, drew the show’s biggest viewership numbers and earned the highest number of Emmy Award nominations for the series.

Texas stories deserve a Texas backdrop. That’s why I teamed up with Dennis Quaid, Woody Harrelson, Billy Bob Thornton, and Renée Zellweger for True to Texas. It’s time to bring film and TV productions home! pic.twitter.com/iMpRMRx2Hj
