Back in late 2021 came the news that “Dune” filmmaker Denis Villeneuve was planning a film adaptation of “2001” author Arthur C. Clarke’s novel “Rendezvous With Rama”.
The story is set in the 2130s and follows the investigation of a thirty-mile-long cylindrical alien spaceship with mysterious origins that has been set adrift in our Solar System by an unknown intelligence.
We follow a group of human explorers who intercept the ship in an attempt to unlock its mysteries and make humanity’s first contact with an alien species.
The project has an incredibly long gestational history, one going back to the early 2000s with the likes of David Fincher attached as director.
Villeneuve was originally lining this up for his post-“Dune: Part Two” project but instead has opted to next do “Dune: Messiah” which will shoot as early as September for a likely early 2027 release. In a recent interview with Konbini (via WoR), he re-affirmed his desire to tackle ‘Rama’ and explained the reason why:
“There’s a possibility of adapting an Arthur C. Clarke novel, ‘Rendezvous With Rama’. Like ‘2001: A Space Odyssey,’ it’s about astronauts coming into contact with another civilization. It’s an exploration where we engage with technology that could realistically exist in the future, unlike ‘Dune’, which leans more toward fantasy. For the first time, I’d be able to work on hard science fiction. I’d love to do that at least once in my life.”
Alcon Entertainment and Revelations Entertainment will produce the film, Alcon having worked with Villeneuve on both “Prisoners” and “Blade Runner 2049”. Eric Roth, who penned Villeneuve’s “Arrival,” is writing the script.
