Trudeau, Sheinbaum vow to 'enhance the strong bilateral relations' amid US tariffs

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum pledged to “enhance the strong bilateral relations” between their two countries the same day President Trump enacted tariffs on them, according to a readout on Trudeau’s website.

“Yesterday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum. Prime Minister Trudeau and President Sheinbaum discussed the deep people-to-people ties, the strong trade and investment relationship between Canada and Mexico, and the importance of preserving North American competitiveness and prosperity,” the Sunday readout reads.

“They spoke about the imposition of U.S. tariffs on both countries, as well as their respective efforts to enhance border security and combat the production and distribution of illegal drugs. The leaders agreed to continue working together in areas of common interest and to enhance the strong bilateral relations between Canada and Mexico,” the readout continues.

On Sunday, Trump defended his decision to impose sweeping tariffs on the U.S.'s top three trading partners. He went on Truth Social after imposing the 25 percent tariffs on Mexico and Canada, as well as a 10 percent tariff on China.

“The ‘Tariff Lobby,’ headed by the Globalist, and always wrong, Wall Street Journal, is working hard to justify Countries like Canada, Mexico, China, and too many others to name, continue the decades long RIPOFF OF AMERICA, both with regard to TRADE, CRIME, AND POISONOUS DRUGS that are allowed to so freely flow into AMERICA,” Trump said on social media.

Trudeau said on Friday that his country “won’t back down” from Trump’s previous threat to impose a 25 percent tariff.

“We’re showing the new American administration that they have a strong partner in Canada when it comes to upholding border security, all while simultaneously underscoring that we won’t back down, that if tariffs are implemented against Canada, we will respond,” Trudeau said.
